Hamster treats!

You may find various treats in pet stores and most hamsters love these. Treats should only be fed to the hamster as an occasional supplement to the hamster's diet. Some treats bought from pet stores are designed to hang from the top of the cage. These treats provide stimulation as well as food to the hamster. Homemade treats can be fed to your hamster - like bread, scrambled egg, boiled egg, rice crackers and mealworms. Mealworms are usually found at pet stores that sell exotic pets.

Hamster Colds

Hamster Colds

Hamster colds can be caused from draughts so placing the cage in the right place is very important. The symptoms of hamster colds are:  hamster sneezing, hamster with wet nose, hamster breathing heavily and the hamster always sitting in a hunched position.  

It is very important that you never wash you hamster. One of the common reasons why a hamster catches a cold is from baths. Never handle a hamster when you have a cold as the hamster will easily get a cold from you. A hamster with a cold should be kept in a draught free and warm room. Palatable foods (soft food) are good for sick hamsters. A little added honey with water may encourage the hamster to drink. You can also give the hamster some lukewarm milk mixed with water. The lukewarm milk should be changed at least three times daily for two days.

Chinese Hamster

The Chinese Hamster is the most ‘rat like’ type of hamster since this hamster's tail is longer than the other hamsters. Chinese Hamsters can live in pairs if brought together from a young age; but they can become extremely aggressive towards each other, thus housing Chinese Hamsters alone can be the best choice. The Chinese Hamster is approximately 10-12cm long and its scientific name is 'Cricetulus griseus'. Click here to read a hamster article about Chinese Hamsters.

Roborovski Hamsters

Roborovski Hamsters are also of the dwarf type and are the smallest from all types of hamsters. They are around 4-5.5cm in length. They are rather a type of hamster to be observed than handled as they are extremely lively! Robo Hamsters can live in groups of the same sex if brought together from a young age. Winter Whites.

Winter White hamsters are a bit like Campbell's but have smaller bodies and different colours Winter Whites are often to be a dark grey colour and Campbell's are often brown!


The Winter Whites where introduced in the early 1970's they are rapidly increasing in popularity because of there unique ability to change colours from grey to white.

Winter whites are around 7-10cm long. There scientific name is Phodopus Sungorus.

Types of Hamsters

Syrian Hamsters

Size are from 12-16cm.
The average lifespan for Syrian Hamsters is 2 years.
Teddy-Bear Hamster is another word for long Haired Hamsters because they are resemblance of a teddy bear.
The Syrian Hamster lives alone in the wild because Syrian hamsters can be very aggressive towards each other and can seriously hurt each other.
The Syrian Hamster is referred to Golden Hamsters!
